RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Midway held the top-three spots in pole vault for the second-consecutive River States Conference Championship meet, as field events lifted the Eagles to a second-place finish on day one of RSC Track and Field Outdoors, which were held on Friday.
Midway, which had two wins and eight all-conference performances, held the lead until the day's final event, when Indiana East jumped ahead with 91 points. The Eagles enter day two with 78.5 points, a half point better than third-place Rio Grande.
After landing the top-three pole vault spots
at the indoor meet in February, Midway did it again in somewhat surprising fashion Friday.
Cate Coppola, who no-heighted at the Indoor Championships, topped
All-American teammates
Maddi Reed and
Emerson VanScoy for the outdoor title, clearing 3.68 meters.
Not only did she win, Coppola also clinched a spot at the NAIA Outdoor Championships, hitting the exact qualifying 'B' standard. This is her first time qualifying for a national meet.
She will be joined at the Outdoor Championships by Reed and VanScoy, who both qualified during the regular season. Reed was second at 3.58 meters Friday, while VanScoy was third at 3.48.
In an exhaustive day in which she took part in three events that took place consecutively, VanScoy was all-conference in all three.Â
The Eagles had the top-two spots in high jump, with VanScoy winning at 1.57 meters, .05 better than
Malene Obermayer. Then, in long jump, VanScoy was second with a distance of 5.37.
Trinity Gottler was also a two-time All-RSC field event honoree. She was second with a throw of 37.70 in javelin and third at 47.42 in weight throw, breaking her own school record in the latter.
That was one of three school records set on Friday. On the track side,
Emilee Cecil finished the 100-meter dash prelims in a program-best 12.47 second, with Reed setting a new mark with a 16.18 in the 100 hurdles. Both runners qualified for the event finals on Saturday.
Other Eagles to score were Obermayer in the long jump (fifth, 5.12), Reed in high jump (tied for fifth, 1.47),
Ariah Egleston in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (fifth, 12:52.36) and the 4x800 relay team of
Stevie McSorley,
Emma Lesher,
Macy Adams and
Alarra Cobbins (sixth, 11:12.36).
The second and final day of competition will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
