RIO GRANDE, Ohio - The Midway women's track and field team recorded its best-ever finish at the River States Conference Outdoor Championships, getting four more all-conference finishes en route to taking third place on the final day of competition Saturday.
The Eagles, who were in second place
after a pair of wins on Friday, finished with 128.5 points, behind only the 210 of Indiana East and 172 of Rio Grande. Indiana Kokomo was fourth with 115.5.
Midway, which re-started its track and field program prior to the 2019-2020 season, had its previous best at the RSC Outdoor Championships was a fifth-place showing in both 2023 and 2025. The Eagles also finished third at the RSC Indoor Championships in 2021.
The star of Saturday was
Emilee Cecil, who captured all-conference honors in three events.
After setting a program record in the 100-meter dash prelims on Friday, Cecil broke the record again Saturday, taking second in 12.07 seconds. Individually, she also placed third in the 200 in 25.74.
Her other All-RSC performance came in the 4x100-meter relay, where Cecil teamed with
Cate Coppola,
Lillian Alcorn adn
Maddi Reed to finish in 50.67 seconds.
Trinity Gottler, an all-conference finisher in javelin and hammer throw Friday, added a third plaque with a third-place, 40.91-meter throw in discus Saturday. Gottler scored in shot put as well, throwing a 12.32 to place fifth.
In the 100 hurdles,
Maddi Reed and
Kashlynn Rice placed fourth and fifth, running a 16.46 and 16.71 respectively.
Rice then placed fourth in the 400 hurdles in a program-record time of 1:09.92.
Rice, Reed,
Stevie McSorley and Coppola then closed out the day with a fifth-place run of 4:27.22 in the 4x400 relay. Reed was also named to the Champions of Character team.
Midway is expected to compete in the Lee Last Chance meet in Cleveland, Tenn. next Saturday, according to head coach
Jay Walls. The Eagles have already had a program-record four athletes qualify for nationals.
Currently,
Emerson VanScoy,
Maddi Reed and
Cate Coppola are set to compete at Nationals in pole vault. VanScoy is also a qualifier in high jump while
Trinity Gottler reached in javelin.
