Two wrestlers earn top-six finishes at Cumberland Open

LEBANON, Tenn. - Two Midway wrestlers earned top-six finishes at the Cumberland Open. Both JT Adams (heavyweight) and Alex Velazquez (141) would earn their places after multiple rounds of competition.

Neither wrestler had an official placement, as a fifth-place match was not held in either weight class.

Velazquez came out the gate swinging as he earned his first two victories by fall over Matthew Ball of Lindsey Wilson (3:55) and Lane Wishart of St. Thomas University (3:35).

He was 2-2 on the day as his semifinal and consolation semifinal matches were lost by decision.

JT Adams (HWT) also earned himself a pair of pins on the day. He defeated Robert Lee of Lyon College (2:46) and Maximiliano Taboada of St. Thomas (1:46) with a medical forfeit win over King University's Mateo Armendariz in-between. He finished 3-2 on the day.

Zach Lewis (125) and Lucas Hall (141) also earned victories for Midway.

"It was great to see a bunch of our younger guys get to compete today," said coach Kenny Mason after the tournament, "They have been working really hard in the practice room and I was seeing them hit the moves we have been working on. I was really pleased with the effort today."

Saturday wrapped up the regular season for the Eagles as they now prepare for the Mid-South Conference Championships on Feb. 15, in Bowling Green, Ky.
