BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Kyler Adams at
Abe Hafez qualified for the NAIA Men's National Champioships, while a program-record nine wrestlers placed at the Mid-South Conference Championships on Friday.
The Eagles placed fifth overall with a score of 71 points. Cumberlands (Ky.) won with 171, 20 better than runner-up Campbellsville (Ky.)
Competing at 149 pounds, Adams made Midway history becoming the first four-time national qualifier.
He went 2-2 on the day, his only losses coming to the Nos. 4 and 6 wrestlers in the country.
Hafez also had a 2-2 performance was in the toughest bracket of the day, as the 165-pound class sent six wrestlers to nationals.
He was defeated in his first match by No. 20 Mitchell Freeman of (University of Rio Grande), but he would get his revenge in the fifth-place match, where he won by fall.
David Emfinger had Midway's highest finish of the day, placing third with a 2-1 record in a 197-pound class with only one automatic-qualifier spot.
Also placing on the record-setting day for the Eagles were
Kaleb Clark (fourth, 157),
Aaron Garcia (fourth, heavyweight),
Christopher Sperin (sixth, 149)
Chris Begley (sixth, 157),
Oscar Adams (sixth, heavyweight) and
Jabril Williams (eighth, 165).
Three other wrestlers still have a chance to join Adams and Hafez at nationals, as Sperin, Williams and Garcia are all eligible for at-large bids, which will be chosen by a committee of NAIA officials and announced on Feb. 25.
Garcia was named Midway's Champion of Character, while he, Adams, Clark, Williams,
Anthony Caruso,
Sebastian Hutchinson and
Nolan Jones all made the conference's All-Acadmic Team.
The NAIA National Championships will be held in Park City, Kan. on March 6-8.
