Men's volleyball sweeps Milligan, snaps home losing streak

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway men's volleyball earned its first home win in nearly two years in convincing fashion Monday, sweeping Millgian (Tenn.) 25-16, 25-23, 25-21.

It was the first win of the season for the 1-2 Eagles and their first, non-forfeited win at Marshall Gymnasium since a 3-0 win over St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) on March 7, 2023, a streak of 12 matches.

Midway was on fire at the net in the opening set, hitting .400. The last time the Eagles hit better than that in a set also came in a sweep against Milligan, when they recorded a .471 in set one and a .435 in set three in a match on Jan. 29, 2023.

The final two sets were much tougher, and the Buffs looked primed to even things up after taking a 19-16 lead on an Eagle attack error in set two.

But that would be answered by consecutive kills by Jai'Den Chinnis and Steven Tippenhauer and Midway eventually pulled ahead 23-21 off of three-consecutive Milligan errors.

The Buffs pulled even again at 23, but Tippenhauer added another kill of a Jordan Daily assist and yet another Milligan attack error cliched a two-set advantage for Midway.

Tippenhauer came up big at the end of the third set as well, recording both a kill and an ace as Midway finished on a 5-0 run after trailing 21-20.

Chinnis ended the match with the last of his match-high nine kills. Noah Fichter had 14 assists while fellow freshman setter Jordan Daily had 10 to go along with eight digs, six kills and a .417 hitting percentage.

Another freshman, Lincoln Anderson, led all players with 10 digs.

Weather permitting, the Eagles will play their first match in the River States Conference on Friday, where they are scheduled to travel to Indiana East at 6:30 p.m.
