MIDWAY, Ky. - Just seconds from pulling off an upset victory, a short-handed Midway men's basketball team instead suffered a brutal defeat, as Shawnee State's Marcos Vazquez hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer, lifting the Bears to a 77-76 win at Marshall Gymnasium Tuesday.
Playing just seven players, the Eagles overcame a six-point deficit early in the second half, going ahead 69-66 on a
Creshaun Brown 3-pointer with 4:15 remaining.
Midway stretched its lead to 75-70 with just under a minute to play on a jumper by
Amari Wales, who led all players with 22 points and three steals.
But as the Bears closed in, Midway struggled to put the game away at the foul line. The Eagles made just 10-of-17 free throw attempts on the night including two critical misses down the stretch.
Leading 76-74, Midway got a stop when
Miguel Shaw made an emphatic block of an AJ Belton attempt, after which Shawnee called a timeout with three seconds to play.
But after in-bounding the ball, Vazquez snuck into the corner and got an open look after two Midway defenders collapsed onto Bears leading scorer Tre Beard. And with just over a second left, he released a shot that hit only net as time expired, sending his team to a sixth-consecutive win.
Shaw finished with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting while
Nick Keeton put in 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Decoreio Smith added nine points, six rebounds and five assists for Midway, which is 9-15 on the year and 6-9 in conference play.
The Eagles' season will draw to a close on Saturday, when they host West Virginia Tech at 1 p.m. with a senior day celebration to be held prior to the game.
