MIDWAY, Ky. - Just days after suffering a brutal loss at the buzzer, the Midway men's basketball team was able to survive a similar end-of-game sequence, closing out its season with a thrilling 79-76 win over West Virginia Tech Saturday.
Prior to the game, the Eagles sent off nine departing players, holing a senior day celebration for
Jalen Cincore,
Nick Keeton,
Will VanHook,
Robbie Henry,
Creshaun Brown,
Miguel Shaw,
Jacob Spencer,
Chase Davis and
Isaiah Francis.
The afternoon started about as badly as it could have, as the Eagles missed their first eight field goal attempts and fell into a 10-0 hole. But they responded with a 28-10 run, with 13 of those points coming from Decorieo Smith.
The Golden Bears would have a rally of their own to take a 35-34 lead into halftime, which gave way to a thrilling second half in which the lead changed hands seven times.
With the score tied at 68,
Creshaun Brown took over for the Midway offense. Having recorded just four points until then, he scored 11 in the last 3:05.
He broke the 68-68 tied with a 3-pointer, then proceeded to hit another on each of the next two possessions.
WVU Tech cut the Midway lead to 77-76 on a Cameron Danser triple before Brown avoided a steal attempt, gathered himself then beat the shot clock with a jumper in the paint with 14 seconds remaining.
After losing to Shawnee State 77-76 on
a 3-pointer as time expired Tuesday, the Eagles were again tasked with making a stop on the final possession and this time came through.
Midway crowded the 3-point line and had defenders in good position to contest an Adam Seams attempt with three seconds remaining. Seams got a shot off but it bounced off the rim and into the arms of
Will VanHook, who alertly threw the ball over the midcourt line to allow the time to run out.
This marked Midway's
first ever season sweep of the Golden Bears, and 3-point shooting was the difference in both games. The Eagles were 12-of-23 from 3 on Saturday and 26-of-46 in the two games against Tech.
Smith and Brown tied for the team lead with 15 points and three 3s, while VanHook and
Chase Davis both hit two, Davis' makes being his first of the season.
Robbie Henry added 11 points and eight rebounds while VanHook had four blocked shots to go along with his 10 points, as Midway closes out the year with a 10-15 record overall and a 7-9 mark in River States Conference play.
