Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball stops skid with lights-out shooting performance at Tech

BECKLEY, W.V. - For the third game in a row, the Midway men's basketball team built up a double-digit road lead against a River States Conference opponent.

But after falling short in the previous two, the Eagles were able to hold on, riding one of the best shooting performances in program history to a 102-93 win at West Virginia Tech Tuesday.

The Eagles were on fire from 3-point range all night, making 14-of-23 attempts.

The 14 made triples tied for the third most in a single game in program history, while the shooting percentage of 60.9 is the second-best recorded by an Eagle team, trailing only a 61.5-percent effort in a win against St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) on Dec. 3, 2022.

And though the Eagles didn't quite break the single-game percentage record, they easily eclipsed the volume of that 8-for-13 performance, with some unexpected players leading the way.

The trio of Miguel Shaw, Creshaun Brown and Decoreio Smith went a combined 13-of-17 on 3-point tries.

Shaw and Brown, who both came off the bench, each had their best scoring efforts at Midway.

Shaw, who had just five made 3s coming into the night, went 6-of-8 to finish with 24 points. He was just one made 3-pointer shy of tying the single-game program record of seven, which is held by four different players.

Brown, who came in having scored 55 points for the season, scored 22 while making 4-of-5 from deep.

Smith finished with 20 points while Nick Keeton (14) and Amari Wales (10), also scored in double-figures. Midway also dished out a season-best 24 assists, nine of which came from Will VanHook.

After falling behind by 10 in the first half, the Golden Bears, who were undefeated at home entering the night, got within one point on three separate occasions in the second, the last coming when two Darrin Martin free throws made the score 72-71 with 9:16 to play.

But an Eagle team that's struggled to close for much of the season responded with a 16-2 run over the next four minutes, starting with a Shaw 3-pointer and ending with a Keeton layup.

Tuesday marked just the second time the Eagles have defeated the Golden Bears in nine meetings and was their first ever win in four trips to West Virginia Tech.

Now 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the RSC, Midway returns to the road for a tough challenge on Saturday, traveling to face St. Mary of the Woods at 1 p.m. The Mighty Oaks are 14-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
