MIDWAY, Ky. - Playing without one of its best players against one of the hottest teams in the NAIA, Midway ran out of gas in the second half of a 75-60 women's basketball loss to River States East Division leader Shawnee State Tuesday.
The Eagles took a 30-28 lead on a
Jermyra Christian 3-pointer roughly four minutes into the second quarter and held it for nearly the entire rest of the half before the Bears got a layup and a free throw off a Midway turnover in the final 10 seconds that put Shawnee State up 39-38 at halftime.
The Bears, who have already locked up the No. 1 seed in the East for the RSC Tournament, carried that momentum into the third quarter, starting out on a 13-5 run and staying in control on their way to a 10th-consecutive win.
After shooting nearly 50 percent in the opening half, Midway was just 8-of-25 from the floor with 11 turnovers in the second.
Atlantis White scored in double figures for the 12th time in her last 13 games, scoring a team-high 16 points. White was 6-of-8 from the floor and made all three of her 3-point attempts.
Jermyra Christian nearly recorded a double-double, scoring nine points and dishing out a career-high 10 assists for Midway, which fell to 15-12 with a 9-6 mark in the RSC.
The Eagles hold a one-game lead over Indiana East for the No. 3 seed in the East Division and can clinch it with a win over West Virginia Tech, which is just 2-24 on the year with a 1-14 mark in league play, on Saturday.
The game is scheduled to tip at 3 p.m. with a senior day ceremony beforehand.
