MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway women's basketball easily handled an overmatched West Virginia Tech team 85-61 on Saturday and secured an opening-round matchup with in-state foe Brescia in the River States Tournament on Wednesday.
Before the game, a senior day celebration was held to send off the departing
Amoni White,
Atlantis White and
Kassidy Daugherty.
Once the ball tipped, it was all Eagles, who scored the game's first 10 points and got scoring contributions from 15 different players.
Sophomores
Jermyra Christian and
Jacie Chesser stole the show Saturday. Christian had 19 points and seven rebounds while Chesser had a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double for a Midway team that had a 61-42 rebounding advantage.
Eight of Chesser's rebounds came on the offensive end, which she turned into six second-chance points. Chesser also led all players with three blocked shots.
The Eagles conclude the regular season 16-12. They went 10-6 in the RSC, the third-best record in the East Division.
They will now prepare for an opening round road matchup against Brescia, which at 9-7 in league play, secured the No. 2 spot in the West.
A lone regular-season matchup between the two teams went to the Bearcats, who built up a 13-point lead and withstood a late Midway rally
to earn a 71-69 win at Marshall Gymnasium on Jan. 23. Prior to that, the Eagles had won the previous eight meetings.
The game will tip at 7 p.m.
