Eagles drop baseball DH at No. 5 Cumberlands

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Looking for makeup games after a weekend home series against Sienna Heights (Mich.) was canceled, the Midway baseball team was rewarded with a Sunday doubleheader on the road against NAIA fifth-ranked Cumberlands.

The Eagles mustered just two hits in a 7-1 loss in the opener, then rallied back within a run after falling in a 6-0 hole, only for the Patriots to pull away with six runs in the bottom of the eighth in a 12-5 final in game two.

GAME ONE: CUMBERLANDS 7, MIDWAY 1

Midway's lone run came in the fourth inning on an RBI double by Scott Kendrick after the Patriots had already opened up a 5-0 lead.

Both Eagle hits came in the fourth inning. Barrett McGill had a one-out single, with pinch-runner Ayden Sciandra coming in to score on Kendrick's hit.

GAME TWO: CUMBERLANDS 12, MIDWAY 5

The Eagles left the bases loaded in the first inning then saw UC score six unanswered runs.

But Midway came storming back with a four-run seventh inning. After Eli Glasscock delivered an RBI double, Kendrick continued his career day with a three-run home run.

The sophomore from Lexington had just two hits and two RBIs in his varsity career entering the day. He reached base four times in the second game, adding a single and two walks.

Transfer Mahrlon Torres then came through with his first home run and RBI in a Midway uniform in the top of the eighth, his solo homer to left field making it a 6-5 game.

The momentum would dissolve in the bottom of the inning. After the Patriots had already brought home two runs, Edwin Martinez put the game out of reach with a two-out grand slam.

In the seven-run final, Cumberlands scored seven runs with two outs and also benefited from four Midway errors.

Glasscock, Torres and Carlos Canales all had two hits for the Eagles, who had a season-high12 in the game.

Midway falls to 2-8, with six of its losses coming to the third- (Georgia Gwinnett), fifth- (Cumberlands) and sixth-ranked (Reinhardt) teams in the country.

Having already been forced to cancel eight scheduled home games due to weather, the Eagles will try again this week. They are currently scheduled to host Pikeville at 2 p.m. Tuesday before opening River States Conference play against West Virginia Tech, a three-game series kicking off at 2 p.m. Friday.
