BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Midway softball season got off to a tough start Monday, with the Eagles dropping both games of an in-state doubleheader against Union, losing 6-4 and 13-5.
GAME ONE: UNION 6, MIDWAY 4
The Eagles mustered just three hits through six innings and found themselves down 6-2 going into their last at-bat after the Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the sixth.
They attempted to make things interesting as
Ryann Berger led off with a single and eventually came home on a double by
Kennadi Thompson. It was Thompson's second RBI of the game, as she also had a sacrifice fly in the second inning.
The Eagles got within 6-4 on a
Payton Baum single and brought the tying run to the plate with just one out, but the final two batters were retired by Union reliever Jeweleyette Lilley.
Transfer
Sierra Bittner had a great showing in her first game as an Eagle, finishing 2 for 3 with an RBI single in the sixth.
GAME TWO: UNION 13, MIDWAY 5
Midway once again fell behind early after the Bulldogs scored twice in each of the first two innings, but looked primed to make a comeback after a three-run effort in the top of the third.
Freshman
Madison Hill got her first college RBI on a double before Bittner and Berger drove in runs with singles.
But Union had an even bigger response in the bottom of the inning, scoring six times, the first two off Midway errors and the last three on a Megan Merritt home run.
Grimley, Berger and
Tenley Gilbert all had two hits in the loss for Midway in the first of four two-game series on its schedule this week.
The Eagles host Asbury in their home opener on Wednesday, the first game of the doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
