MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway couldn't string together enough timely hits, resulting in a two-game sweep at the hands of Asbury by the finals of 4-2 and 3-2 in the first home softball games of the 2025 season Wednesday.
GAME ONE: ASBURY 4, MIDWAY 2Â Â Â Â
The home Eagles were able to close the gap after falling in a 4-0 hole early, scoring on an RBI groundout by
Payton Baum in the fourth inning and a single by
Sierra Bittner in the fifth.
Midway would put a runner in scoring position on a
Tenley Gilbert stolen base with two outs in the seventh, but its luck would run out just moments later, when Gilbert was thrown out trying to steal third.
The Eagles got an excellent relief performance from freshman pitcher
Athena Grimley, who scattered three hits over four shutout innings.
GAME TWO: ASBURY 3, MIDWAY 2
Things looked grim going into the seventh. Down 3-1, Midway's previous 13 batters had been retired by Asbury pitcher Kaylee Strunk.
They would proceed to get interesting very quickly. Sidney Snodgrass led off the inning with a single before next batter
Kennadi Thompson doubled to the wall in left-center to put runners on second and third.
Strunk would retire the next two batters before pinch-runner
Lana Maupin scored on a throwing error by Asbury catcher Natalie Ison, who air-mailed a throw attempting to pick Thompson off at second.
Unfortunately, the comeback attempt would conclude after Strunk got
Sydney Apling to fly out to short.
Snodgrass had the Eagles' only other hit as well, singling home Gilbert in the first inning.
Midway drops to 0-4 on the season and will play four series over the next week, starting with a doubleheader at Campbellsville Thursday, beginning at 1 p.m.
