MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway made clutch plays at the plate and in the field to secure rookie coach
Bailey Curry the first wins of her head coaching career against Kentucky Christian Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles belted 15 hits to win the opener 12-8, then took advantage of a pair of two-out errors that brought home a walkoff run in a 3-2 win in the finale.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 12, KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN 8
The Knights, who entered the day 6-0, broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the fourth, scoring four times.
Midway had an answer though, batting around and scoring six runs in the bottom half, the big blow coming on a two-run, two-out home run by
Kennadi Thompson to put the Eagles ahead 8-6.
An offense that had its highest hit total of the season was led by
Ryann Berger and
Sawyer Snodgrass, who both went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Thompson,
Tenley Gilbert,
Autumn Wampler and
Kaydence Hamilton all had two hits with Hamilton scoring four runs.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 3, KENTUCKY CHRISTIAN 2Â Â
Shutout through six innings, the Knights seemingly took all the momentum in the top of the seventh when a two-run single by Kylie Mathes tied the game.
With just one out, the Eagle defense was able to make a play, when Gilbert made a lunging catch on fly ball at short then doubled off the runner at second. They then were able to escape with a win after the KCU defense imploded.
The Knights made five errors in game two, none bigger than the two they had in the seventh. Snodgrass led off the inning and was at second with two outs, when a low throw by shortstop Alyna Ruiz allowed
Sierra Bittner to beat the throw.
Ensuing batter
Autumn Wampler then hit a slow roller to second, that seemed to redirect in the dirt when it reached second baseman Alexis Holleman, who couldn't bring in the grounder, allowing Snodgrass to score the winning run.
Snodgrass also had an RBI single in the first inning and Berger had two more hits for Midway, which scored by virtue of a two-out Knight error in the fourth inning as well.
Midway pitcher
Breanna Beach got the win after throwing six shutout innings. Beach didn't record a strikeout but gave up just two walks and was supported by a defense that didn't make an error.
The Eagles will play their sixth double header in the span of a week on Sunday, traveling to Georgetown. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
