MIDWAY, Ky. - Big innings on offense and quality plays on defense keyed Midway baseball's mid-week, non-conference sweep of in-state opponent Union at Tracy Farmer - Don Ball Stadium Tuesday.
Grant Hotchkiss and
Eli Glasscock combined to reach base seven times in eight plate appearances in a 12-5 win in the opener, while
Peyton Henry and
Cole Ginter both had their best games in an Eagle uniform in game two, a 10-2 win.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 12, UNION 5
Hotchkiss and Glasscock started off the bottom of the first with singles before coming around to score, and the pair would key the offensive effort the rest of the game.
Glasscock added a two-run home run in the third inning, with Hotchkiss concluding the scoring in a five-run fourth with an RBI single.
Shane Taylor and
Barrett McGill both had two RBIs and
Grant Stone hit his first home run at Midway via a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Pitchers
Blake Kincaide,
Cade McKee and
Zane Patton combined for 10 strikeouts without a single walk. Their control proved crucial as the Bulldogs, who held a 10-9 hit advantage, walked seven while also hitting two batters.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 10, UNION 2
The Eagles fell in a 2-0 hole at the end of the first inning, but got a run back when Ginter scored Taylor on a two-out double, driving in his first run in a Midway uniform.
He would add two more by day's end, hitting his first home run as an Eagle on a solo shot in the fifth then driving in the day's final run on a sixth-inning single.
Henry, who had just one RBI coming into the game, also drove in three runs in game two, including a two-run single in the third inning that put Midway ahead 3-2 and an RBI double in the sixth.
The lead would stay with the Eagles the rest of the way, stretching to 5-2 at the end of the third, after
Isaac Tencza drew a bases-loaded walk and
Mahrlon Torres scored on a wild pitch.
Union would load the bases with two outs in its next at-bat and nearly tied the game after Ryan Brown hit a deep fly ball to centerfield. But despite running full-speed into the wall in centerfield,
Carlos Canales was able to see the ball into his glove and hold on through contact.
That would be followed by Ginter's home run and a four-run sixth, with a Torres single and Tencza sacrifice fly sandwiched between Henry's double and Ginter's single.
On the mound, relievers
Joshua Plasencia,
Matthew Poe,
Luke Richardson,
Dalton Soergel and
Grant Stone threw five combined innings of shutout ball, striking out seven while allowing just four hits.
Now 7-3 in their last 10 games, the Eagles are back in River States Conference action for a three-game stand at Shawnee State (Ohio) on Thursday and Friday. Both teams come in 4-2 in conference play.
The games were originally supposed to be Friday and Saturday, but were moved up due to weather concerns. The teams will play a single game at 3 p.m. Thursday and a doubleheader beginning at noon on Friday.
