PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Midway jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Shawnee State's offense exploded for 11 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, eventually topping Midway 13-3 in the first game of a River States Conference baseball series.
Eli Glasscock and
Shane Taylor scored unearned runs in the first and second innings respectively. But after the Bears got a run back in the bottom of the second, the wheels fell off for Midway with two outs in the fourth.
With the bases loaded, Tyler Lund drew a walk to tie the game, then Shawnee took the lead on a Nolan Tressler single. The Eagles had a chance to escape with just a one-run deficit, but an error brought home two more runs.
Midway got within 5-3 on a solo Glasscock home run in the top of the fifth, only for Shawnee State to respond with a seven-run, six-hit showing in the bottom half.
After the leadoff man was retired, the next eight batters reached. And even when the Eagles got a second out, it still produced a run on a Diego Mendoza groundout.
Lund and Tressler then teamed up to end the game early in the seventh, Lund leading off with a triple before coming home on a Tressler single.
After the two teams entered the day tied in the River States Conference standings, the Bears improved to 5-2 while dropping the Eagles to 4-3. They will square off twice more on Friday, with the first game beginning at noon.
