PORTSMOUTH, Ohio - Midway and Shawnee State both brought their offensive A-games to a River States Conference baseball doubleheader Friday, with each team earning a win.
The Bears, who won the series
thanks to a 13-3 win against Midway in Thursday's opener, overcame a six-run Eagle burst in the sixth inning with a 13-11 win in Friday's opener, before Midway platted nine total runs in the fifth and sixth to take the final game 13-8.
GAME ONE: SHAWNEE STATE 13, MIDWAY 11
Midway trailed 8-3 going into the sixth inning before rallying to take a 9-8 lead, the last runs coming via a three-run
Peyton Henry triple with the bases loaded. The Eagles also got runs on bases-loaded walks of
Grant Hotchkiss and
Barrett McGill and a Shawnee State error.
But the lead would be gone the the inning's bottom half, as the Bears would score three runs, all off of Midway miscues. The first came on a pass ball, the next two on an error.
The Bears got another run in the bottom of the seventh, then added another in the bottom of the eighth after an
Ayden Sciandra two-run double had gotten Midway back within 12-11.
Britten Robinson had a team-best three hits, with Hotchkiss,
Shane Taylor and McGill scoring two runs, McGill's first coming on a solo home run in the first inning.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 13, SHAWNEE STATE 8
Henry recorded
his third-consecutive three-RBI game and helped turn things Midway's way when his fourth-inning RBI single cut an early deficit to 4-2.
The Eagles once again took advantage of multiple bases-loaded free passes.
Their first run came in the first inning when Taylor was hit by a pitch. Then in the fifth,
DJ Morain and McGill both drew bases-loaded walks in a four-run frame that also included a two-run Hotchkiss double to give Midway a 6-4 lead.
SSU would again tie the score 6-6 on a two-run Hunter Warner home run in the fifth inning, but that quickly gave way to a six-run top of the sixth, as Midway batted around and put the first five batters on base.
With the bases again loaded,
Isaac Tencza gave the Eagles the lead for good with a two-run double. Henry then made it 10-6 on a two-run single before Hotchkiss scored on a McGill groundout.
Robinson then put a cap on the offensive festivities in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run. All told Midway had five players with multiple hits and five with multiple RBIs.
The win kept the Eagles above .500 in the RSC (5-4) and ran their record to 10-13 overall. They are back on the road to face Lindsey Wilson at 3 p.m. Tuesday before hosting Rio Grande (Ohio) in a three-game conference series on Friday and Saturday.
