MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway softball earned its first River States Conference win, while also handing Rio Grande (Ohio) its first loss, as the teams split a doubleheader in Midway Friday.
After the Red Storm scored three runs to take and 8-6 lead in the top of the seventh, the Eagles rebounded with three runs of their own in the bottom, ending the game on an
Autumn Wampler single to win 9-8.
Rio Grande, which was 5-0 in conference play prior to the game-two loss, scored eight runs in the top of the seventh of the opener, turning a close game into an 11-2 blowout.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 9, RIO GRANDE 8
Kennadi Thompson had a two-run double in the first inning, then
Ryann Berger and
Tenley Gilbert each had two-run singles in the fourth to give Midway a 6-4 lead it would take into the seventh.
But Midway, which has had struggles closing out close games this season, faced issues again. After Nigella Reck tied the game with a two-run single, Kayla Sedgwick gave the Red Storm the lead with a two-run double to center field.
Despite losing the momentum, the Eagles quickly got it back, thanks in part to Red Storm fielding mistakes.
Midway had runners on first and third with one out following singles by
Madison Hill and
Sawyer Snodgrass. Pinch runner
Lana Maupin then stole second, and when the throw sailed into centerfield, Hill was able to score to make it 8-7.
Next batter Thompson then hit a grounder to short, which Reck fielded and attempted to throw out Maupin as she ran to third. But her throw fell short of the base, landing at the foot of Maupin, whose momentum pushed the ball out of play and allowed her to score the tying run.
After a strikeout, the next two batters got two strikes on them, but managed to get on base and eventually, get the Eagles the win.
Sydney Apling was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and third. That set up Wampler, who got around on an inside pitch and blooped it into shallow right field, scoring Thompson for the winning run.
GAME ONE: RIO GRANDEÂ 11, MIDWAY 2
The Eagles scored two runs via Red Storm errors in the first inning, but failed to get any more offense going against Rio standout pitcher Madi Ogden, who struck out 12 batters and allowed just four hits.
Despite this, Midway was still down just 3-2 going into the seventh inning before the game slipped away. Rio had nine hits in an eight-run seventh, at one point recording hits in seven-consecutive at-bats.
Midway is now 5-13 overall with a 1-7 mark in the RSC. After a Saturday series against West Virginia Tech was postponed until March 26, the Eagles return to action Tuesday with a conference doubleheader against Shawnee State (Ohio), with the first game starting at 1 p.m.
