Game Recap: Softball |

Midway softball goes 1-1 in RSC doubleheader at Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. - A pair of three-run innings helped Midway softball earn a 6-4 win in the opener of a River States Conference doubleheader before the Bears jumped out to a five-run first inning on their way to a 12-3 win in game two Tuesday.

The series was originally slated to be played in Midway, but was moved after a weekend rainstorm made the Eagles' home field unplayable. To compensate, a second series scheduled to be played at Shawnee on April 15 will now be played in Midway.

GAME ONE: MIDWAY 6, SHAWNEE STATE 4

The Eagles got all their runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with Ryann Berger starting and ending the scoring with two-run hits.

With Midway down 1-0, Berger hit a two-run single in the fifth. She then scored when ensuing batter Sawyer Snodgrass doubled, then followed a Tenley Gilbert RBI single in the sixth with a two-run double to give the Eagles a 6-1.

After throwing five-consecutive scoreless innings, Alexia Hoskins ran into trouble in the seventh. Following a pair of singles, Sierra Dunnagan got the Bears within 6-4 with a three-run home run.

Shawnee then got a single and stolen base with just one out, but reliever Kendra Jennings was able to get the save, turning a double play by catching a line drive then throwing out Jenna Christopher at second base.

Berger, Snodgrass, Gilbert and Sierra Bittner all had two hits, while Hoskins struck out two and didn't surrender a walk for her fourth-consecutive start.

GAME TWO: SHAWNEE STATE 12, MIDWAY 3

The Bears took the momentum from the end of game one and brought it into an opening inning in which they put up five runs and five hits en route to a five-inning, run-rule win.

Bittner had another strong game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a two-run single in the fifth inning. Autum Wampler also had two hits while Payton Baum had an RBI for 6-14 Midway, which is now 2-8 in RSC play.

The Eagles will be back on the road Saturday, for a doubleheader at Indiana Southeast, beginning at 1 p.m.
