Oaks too mighty for Midway in RSC men's volleyball matchup

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Midway quickly lost steam after a third-set win, seeing a two-match win streak end with a 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-12 loss to Oakland City (Ind.) in River States Conference play Monday.

A first set that featured 13 ties and seven lead changes turned Oakland City's way following consecutive Midway errors that gave OCU a 19-18 lead. Jose Conde tied the set back up at 19 with a kill, but another error, this one on a serve, gave the Mighty Oaks the lead for good as they proceeded to score six of the final seven points.

That carried over into set two, where Oakland City scored the first five points and Midway wasn't able to make up the difference despite playing virtually even the rest of the set.

A sweep seemed imminent as the Oaks led by as many as six early and held a 19-15 lead before the Eagles caught fire from the service line.

An error and Steven Tippenhauer ace cut the deficit to 19-17. Then after an Oakland City kill and service ace, Midway scored seven in a row, highlighted by two Jaden Alston aces and concluded with consecutive Jai'Den Chinnis kills.

The Oaks would make things interesting, scoring three in a row to get within 24-23 before a service ace got the Eagles within a set.

That would prove to be the highlight of the evening. Oakland City rebounded by hitting .552 in the fourth set and at one point scored nine points in a row to lock up the win.

Jordan Daily topped 20 assists for the fifth straight match, finishing with 25, while fellow freshman Lincoln Anderson led all players with 15 digs.

Chinnis had nine kills and five assists while Braden Cacek and Conde had eight and seven kills respectively for the Eagles, who are now 3-13 with a 1-9 mark in the River States Conference.

Midway has three more RSC matches this week, starting with a 7 p.m. trip to Lebanon, Tenn. to take on Cumberland tomorrow.
