LEBANON, Tenn. - Midway men's volleyball fought to the last point, but ultimately fell to Cumberland University in a three-set match 25-16, 25-6, 25-22 Tuesday.
Despite the loss, the Eagles showed flashes of resilience, particularly in the third set when they pushed Cumberland to the wire. Leading the way for Midway was Jai'Den Chinnis, who recorded a team-high nine kills while also contributing defensively with two digs and a block.
Jordan Daily was another bright spot, notching four kills while setting up his teammates with eight assists.
The Eagles started the match looking to establish their presence at the net, with Braden Cacek opening the scoring on a well-placed kill from Daily. However, Cumberland quickly responded with a strong attacking performance, capitalizing on Midway's errors to take the first set.
The second set proved to be the most challenging for Midway, as Cumberland's serving game dominated. The Phoenix tallied eight service aces in the set, making it difficult for the Eagles to find any rhythm. Midway managed just six points in the frame.
In the third set, the Eagles regrouped and put together their best stretch of play. Midway recorded 12 kills in the set while hitting .320—its highest efficiency of the match.
Chinnis, Jose Conde, and Steven Tippenhauer each found success on the attack, helping Midway stay within striking distance late.
The Eagles tied the set at 21-21 after a kill from Chinnis, but Cumberland closed out the match with a service ace and back-to-back kills.
Defensively, Midway collected 26 digs, with Lincoln Anderson and Daily each contributing six.
Midway, which is 3-13 with a 1-9 record in the River States Conference, will look to bounce back in its next matchup, returning home to face conference rival (RV) Campbellsville (Ky.) at 7 p.m.
