MIDWAY, Ky. - It was a
clean sweep across the board for Midway tennis on Wednesday, as the Eagle men didn't drop a set in opening River States Conference play with a 7-0 win against Shawnee State.
The Eagles set the tone immediately by losing just one game in doubles. The No. 1 team of
German Collado and
Ferran Clapes as well as the No. 3 team of
Manuel Mirabal and
Daniel Pinzon both won 6-0, with
Axel Sperling and
Izan Casado getting a 6-1 win at No. 2.
Clapes and Pinzon both got 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play as well, Clapes defeating Matt Justice at No. 3, Pinzon topping Taylor Pack at No. 5.
Collado and
Aleksey Granitsa were almost as dominant playing at No. 4 and 6. Collado defeated Adam Stanley 6-0, 6-2 with Granitsa topping Aiden Pine 6-0, 6-1.
The top two singles matches were more competitive but still ended in straight-set victories for Midway.
No. 1 player Sperling defeated Daniel Cristobal 6-3, 6-3 and No. 2 Casado beat Zinedine Purbo 7-5, 6-1.
The Eagles are in action each of the next two days as well, starting with a match against Kentucky Wesleyan in Midway tomorrow. Play will begin at the conclusion of the women's match, which starts at noon.
