MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway softball completed a dominant doubleheader sweep over River States Conference opponent West Virgina Tech Wednesday, winning 9-3 in the first game and 10-2 in the second. Both games featured strong offensive performances and solid pitching from the Eagles.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 9, WVU TECH 3
After trailing 1-0 in the first inning due to an unearned run, Midway quickly took control. In the second inning, the Eagles capitalized on defensive errors.
Payton Baum's two-run single, a fielder's choice, and a two-run double from Ryann Berger gave Midway a 5-1 lead. The Eagles continued to build on their advantage.
Athena Grimley earned the win, giving up three runs on six hits and forcing 12 groundouts to help her team lock down the victory.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 10, WEST VIRGINA TECH 2
In the second game, Midway wasted no time taking control. The Eagles scored four runs in the first inning, with Kennadi Thompson's two-run double leading the charge.
Sierra Bittner added an RBI double, and Payton Baum hit another RBI single. Midway added two more unearned runs in the second inning, making it 6-0.
After WVU Tech tried to rally with a solo home run and RBI single in the top of the fifth, Berger hit a solo home run of her own to make it 10-2 and seal the run-rule victory.
Berger was 5-for-6 on the day with three RBIs and six runs scored. She is hitting .652 in her last six games and has reached base in 12 of her last 13 plate appearances.
Before returning to RSC play with a home doubleheader against Brescia Saturday, Midway (8-16, 4-10) will travel to Columbia, Ky. for a non-conference doubleheader against Lindsey Wilson tomorrow, with game one beginning at 4 p.m.
