MIDWAY, Ky. - A day after
opening conference play with a decisive win, the Midway women's tennis team avoided a letdown against a Kentucky Wesleyan team that had just four players, earning a 6-1 win in non-conference action Thursday.
Having already clinched one spot with a forfeit at No. 3 position, the Eagles, who rested standout players
Agustina Olivero and
Mara Guillen, clinched the doubles point when the No. 1 team of
Tanit Cevada and
Sofia Rueda defeated Ella Brown and Angela Ho 6-0.Â
The Eagles also got a thrilling 7-6 at No. 2 doubles, as
Caitlin Wright and
Haley Thompson overcame an early two-game deficit to win via a 10-4 tie-breaker against Baylie McCreary and Allessa Hall.
With the fifth and sixth singles spots also vacated, Midway needed just one win to secure the match, which they got when Rueda beat Ho 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Elevated into the No. 1 spot,
Nana Hishida also earned a straight-set win by defeating Brown 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3,
Angelia Herrera overcame a 6-2 loss in the first set by dominating the second and third by the finals of 6-0 and 10-2 against Hall.
