PERRY PARK, Ky. - Despite an excellent day from
Gage Gregory, Midway was unable to hold onto a day-one lead at the Klash in Kentucky, ultimately falling by two-strokes at the nine-team men's golf tournament Saturday and Sunday.
The Eagles held a three-shot lead after shooting a six-over par 298 on Saturday. But a plus-nine, 301 on Sunday allowed Carthage College (Wis.) to jump into the top spot. Carthage shot a 296 Sunday, finishing with a 597 (+13) to the Eagles' 599.
Despite just missing out on the top team spot, Gregory had the best single round of any player on Sunday. Coming into the day in 18th, Gregory had a three-under par score of 70 to finish in a tie for second with a 149 (+3).
Gregory had six birdies in the second round, including three in a row on the third, fourth and fifth holes and concluded play just two strokes behind tournament medalist James Tyrrell of Carthage.
He was one of four Midway golfers to finish in the top-10.
One stroke behind Gregory in a tie for fourth was
Jack Bedell and
Hayes Mason.
Hunter Graham ended play in a three-way tie for 10th with a two-day score of 153 (+7).
Elsewhere,
Benjamin Spencer finished in 16th with a 157 (+11) and
Tristan Mitchell was 30th with a 161 (+15).
With the River States Conference Tournament fast approaching, Midway will host the Eagle Invitational at Griffin Gate Golf Club in Lexington on April 7-8.
