TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Two late rallies weren't enough for the Midway softball team Friday, which lost 7-6 and 6-3 in a River States Conference doubleheader at St. Mary of the Woods.
After the Pomeroys broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the fifth in game two, the Eagles weren't given a chance to mount a comeback, as the game was called due to darkness.
GAME ONE: SMWC 7, MIDWAY 6
The Eagles surrendered seven-consecutive runs after jumping out to a 4-0 lead through two innings. The Pomeroys had 13 hits and took advantage of four Midway errors which produced four unearned runs.
An offense that hadn't recorded a hit since the second inning came to life down three runs in the seventh.
Ryann Berger and
Sawyer Snodgrass led off the inning with a walk and single, then converted a double steal, which turned into a Berger run on a
Kennadi Thompson sacrifice fly.
Sierra Bittner then singled home Snodgrass, bringing the winning run to the plate with only one out. But that would be as close as the Eagles would get, as the last two outs were recorded on balls that didn't leave the infield.
Berger and Thompson both had RBIs in the first two innings, Berger on a double, Thompson on a single, as Midway scored twice in each of the first two innings. The other runs came on an
Autumn Wampler sacrifice fly in the first and a
Payton Baum solo home run in the second.
GAME ONE: SMWC 6, MIDWAY 3
The Eagles put together tying rallies in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Down 2-0,
Sydney Apling evened the score with a two-run home run. Then after SMWC answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth, Midway again tied the score, this time on an RBI single by Bittner.
But St. Mary of the Woods had another answer in the bottom of the fifth, taking the lead back on a three-run Hanna Boardman home run.
The inning continued until the Eagles got a third out, but umpires ruled that the lightless SMWC Softball Field was no longer suitable for play.
Now 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the RSC, Midway will stay in Indiana for another conference doubleheader Saturday, taking on IU Columbus in an opening game starting at noon.
