Game Recap: Softball |

Softball battles hard but drops two close games against IU Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Midway softball team went to the wire in a pair of games against Indiana Columbus on Saturday but came up just short in both, falling 7-4 in game one and 6-5 in game two.

GAME ONE: IU COLUMBUS 7, MIDWAY 4

Midway got off to a fast start, plating two runs in the opening inning. Ryann Berger led the offense, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two stolen bases, while Kennadi Thompson added a two-run double in the seventh to spark a late rally attempt.

In the circle, Breanna Beach started for the Eagles but struggled through three innings, allowing six runs on five hits. Athena Grimley provided solid relief, tossing three innings while striking out three and giving up just one run. However, the Crimson Pride capitalized on a four-run second inning and never looked back.

GAME TWO: IU COLUMBUS 6, MIDWAY 5

The Eagles came out firing in the second game, jumping to a 4-1 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run homer by Berger and a double by Sawyer Snodgrass. Berger finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI's and a stolen base, while Thompson added another RBI on a key hit in the second inning.

Pitching kept Midway in the game early, as Alexia Hoskins tossed three innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out one.

Anna Duncan followed in relief, throwing 3.2 innings and keeping IU Columbus in check until the seventh inning, when the home team rallied for three runs, all of them coming with two outs.

Midway drops to 2-12 with an 0-6 mark in River States Conference play. The Eagles are back home for a non-conference doubleheader against Grace Christian (Mich) Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m.
