MIDWAY, Ky. - A great first game of offense was backed up by two shutout pitching performances, as Midway softball swept visiting Grace Christian (Mich.) Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles scored seven, two-out runs in the second inning of a 10-0, five-inning win in the opener, then
Athena Grimley threw a complete-game and escaped a bases-loaded jam in the seventh of a 1-0 Eagle victory in game two.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 10, GRACE CHRISTIAN 0
The Eagles had just a runner of first with two outs in the second before a pair of walks loaded the bases, setting up a two-run double by
Tenley Gilbert that kicked off the scoring in what became a run-rule win.
A bases-loaded walk, wild pitch and fielder's choice stretched the lead to 5-0 before
Kennadi Thompson and
Sierra Bittner singles ended the inning's onslaught.
Midway then added two more runs in the following inning, when
Madison Hill hit a two-run triple then scored on a
Sawyer Snodgrass double.
In the pitching circle,
Alexia Hoskins recorded a shutout, scattering five hits over five innings, recording two strikeouts without a walk.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 1, GRACE CHRISTIAN 0
Back-to-back-doubles by Berger and Thompson in the fourth inning produced Midway's only run of the second game, but the offense was carried by Grimley, who dominated the first six innings before showing great escapability in the seventh.
After recording just two hits to that point, the Tigers had two singles in their final at-bat, and further aided by an Eagle error, loaded the bases with just one out.
But they would not put another ball in play, as Grimley froze both Kenzie Brothers and Alyssa Wallinga, striking them out looking to end the game.
Like Hoskins in the opener, Grimley did not register a walk. The last Eagle pitcher to record more than eight strikeouts in a game was Madison Ludwig,
who fanned 13 West Virginia Tech batters on April 21, 2023.
This is also Midway's first time winning both games of a doubleheader via shutout since the 2023 season, in
which it defeated Union (Ky.) 8-0 and 11-0Â on March 15 of that season.
Now 4-12, the Eagles will look to snap an 0-6 start to River States Conference play on Friday, when they host Rio Grande (Ohio) in a doubleheader, the first game beginning at 1 p.m.
Midway was also scheduled to host a pair of games against West Virginia Tech on Saturday, but an incoming storm forced the set to be pushed back to March 26.
