Eagles conclude road trip with sweep of Golden Bears

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SOUTH CHARLESTON, W. Va. -- After splitting the doubleheader with Rio Grande (Ohio) the day before, the Midway softball team concluded their road trip with a River States Conference doubleheader against West Virginia Tech on Friday at Little Creek Park.

The Eagles used a three-run fifth inning to come away with a 4-2 victory in the opener before needing extra innings to complete the sweep with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

Following the sweep, Krystal Cammuse's squad improves to 26-14 overall and 19-5 in league play. The Golden Bears, meanwhile, slip to 19-21 overall and 9-13 in RSC play.

Game 1: Midway 4, WVU Tech 2

The Golden Bears struck first, scoring one in the second, but Midway answered and tied the game with a run in the third. Raigan Allbert (White Bluff, Tenn.) reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before scoring on an RBI single by Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.).

WVU Tech scored an unearned run in the bottom half of the third, but the Eagles once again responded. The response came in the fifth, where Midway scored three runs on three hits.

Thompson collected her second RBI of the contest with an RBI single to center, while Madison Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.) helped her own cause with a two-run single to left, giving her team the 4-2 advantage.

The run support was more than enough for Ludwig, who recorded a perfect seventh inning to help clinch the win. Ludwig – who improved to 17-7 with the win – fanned a career-high 13 and allowed two runs – one earned – on six hits in a complete game performance.

Game 2: Midway 6, WVU Tech 4 (12 Innings)

Unlike the opener, the Eagles struck first when Makenna Talcott completed one of the most exciting plays in the game – an inside-the-park home run. With one out and a runner on first, the Gray, Ga. native hit a liner down the left field line and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run – her first of the season.

The Golden Bears immediately answered with two in the bottom half and took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth, but Midway scored two of their own in the fifth to regain the lead. Makayla McDowell (Nicholasville, Ky.) had an RBI single before Katie Rhodes gave her team a 4-3 lead with an RBI triple to center field.

WVU Tech scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. The home team left the bases loaded in the ninth and left the door open for the visitors, who took the lead with two in the top of the 12th.

Kyra McCall (White House, Tenn.) and Rhodes had back-to-back one-out singles before Raigan Allbert hit a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up 60 feet. Kennadi Thompson then hit a single to right that scored McCall and Rhodes giving her team the 6-4 lead.

Madison Ludwig – who entered the game in the fifth – tossed a perfect bottom of the 12th to clinch the 6-4 victory. The senior improved to 18-7 after picking up her second win of the day. She allowed one run on four hits in her eight innings with five strikeouts.
