Box Score 2 BARBOURVILLE, Ky. -- The Midway softball team returned to the diamond on Wednesday (March 15) when they wrapped up a six-game road swing with a trip to Barbourville, Ky. For a non-conference matchup with Union (Ky.).
Midway not only got 12 scoreless innings from their pitching staff, but they also combined to score 19 runs on 24 hits as they swept both ends of the twinbill winning game one 8-0 before completing the sweep with an 11-0 victory in game two.
Following the sweep, Krystal Cammuse's squad improves to 6-4 on the season as they get set to open River States Conference play on Thursday when they host Oakland City (Ind.). The doubleheader is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. ET at William G. Clark Memorial Field.
Game 1: Midway 8, Union 0 (6 Innings)
The Eagles struck first in the opening frame thanks to Kennadi Thompson (Louisville, Ky.) who clubbed her first homer of the season – a solo shot – giving her team the early 1-0 lead.
Midway added to their lead with a four-run third inning. Madison Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.) and Katie Rhodes (Cedar Hill, Tenn.) hit back-to-back RBI doubles, while Ludwig scored on an error before Rhodes stole home on a double steal, as the lead grew to 5-0.
The Eagles then put themselves in position to shorten the game with a run-rule after scoring one in the fifth and two in the sixth. Emily Taylor (Walton, Ky.) – who was pinch running for Ludwig – scored on an error in the fifth, while Raigan Allbert (White Bluff, Tenn.) and Thompson added an RBI groundout and an RBI single, respectively, in the sixth to make it an 8-0 edge.
The reining RSC Softball Pitcher of the Week, Madison Ludwig, then returned to the circle in the bottom of the sixth to clinch the 8-0 victory. The senior right-hander tossed six shutout innings scattering just two hits to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Thompson led the way at the plate going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs. Makenna Talcott (Gray, Ga.) and Ludwig, meanwhile, each recorded two base knocks in the win.
Game 2: Midway 11, Union 0 (6 Innings)
Kennadi Thompson was at it once again in the nightcap as she gave her team an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after ripping an RBI double to right field.
Kyra McCall (White House, Tenn.) added an RBI single, and Ashley Ward (Lexington, Ky.) drove in a run after reaching on a fielder's choice in the third, while Emily Taylor – who once again was pinch running for Madison Ludwig – scored on an error as Midway took a 4-0 advantage.
The Eagles then put the game out of reach in the sixth when seven runs crossed the plate. Ludwig drove in a pair on a two-run single, while two more runs scored when McCall reached on a two-out error. Ward then laced a two-run double to right field before scoring on an RBI single by Lauren Lingafelter (Haubstadt, Ind.).
Makayla McDowell (Nicholasville, Ky.), who entered the game to start the bottom of the sixth, tossed a scoreless inning with two strikeouts to seal the 11-0 victory. Sarah Jo Calhoun (Campbellsville, Ky.) picked up the win allowing five hits in her five shutout innings.
Offensively, the Eagles recorded 13 total hits with Raigan Allbert, Thompson, Ludwig, McCall, and Lingafelter each recording two hits apiece en route to the win.
