WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Midway baseball battled hard against the No. 9-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Tuesda but ultimately fell 10-1 in a road matchup.
Despite a promising start from Midway's pitching staff, Cumberlands' offense steadily built momentum throughout the game, capitalizing on key opportunities to pull away in the later innings.
The Patriots struck first in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Edwin Martinez. They added another run in the third before Midway responded in the fourth.
With two outs, Josh Halterman reached base and later scored on a fielding error, giving the Eagles their lone run of the contest.
However, Cumberlands continued to apply pressure, tacking on runs in five consecutive innings. A three-run homer from Charlie Muniz in the seventh was the dagger, breaking the game open and putting the Patriots up 9-1.
Halterman led the Eagles at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring the team's only run. Grant Hotchkiss also contributed with a pair of hits.
On the mound, Dalton Soergel turned in a solid start, striking out two over three innings while allowing just two earned runs. Jesse Komoroski provided a bright spot in relief, tossing a scoreless eighth inning.
Midway collected eight hits on the day but struggled to capitalize with runners in scoring position. Meanwhile, the Patriots piled up 15 hits, using timely hitting to fuel their offensive surge.
Midway is currently scheduled to host a pair of non-conference doubleheader against Trinity Christian (Ill.) on Friday and Saturday, but the fate and location of the games is up in the air due to weather concerns.
