RIO GRANDE, Ohio - Despite a pitching gem by
Athena Grimley in game one and another strong offensive effort by
Tenley Gilbert in game two, Midway softball was unable to overcome River States Conference leader Rio Grande Saturday, losing 1-0 and 7-4 Saturday.
GAME ONE: RIO GRANDE 1, MIDWAY 0
Grimley proved up to the task of battling against one of the best pitchers in the RSC in Rio's Madi Ogden. Though she didn't have a strikeout, Grimley worked well with her defense, allowing just three hits and one walk.
The Red Storm would be held scoreless until their literal last batter of the game, when Ogden, who also allowed just three hits with 10 strikeouts, helped her own cause with an RBI single. The Eagles got out of the inning when
Ryann Berger threw Maddie Engler out as she tried to go from second base to third.
Berger then nearly extended the game, leading off the seventh inning with a single before reaching third with two outs. She would be left there, as Ogden struck out
Lana Maupin, ending the game just one hour and nine minutes after it began.
GAME TWO: RIO GRANDE 7, MIDWAY 4
The Eagles struck first when
Kennadi Thompson singled home Gilbert, who led off the game with a single. But the Red Storm took the lead with a two-run, two-out single by Lindzie Runions in the second inning, a lead that would balloon to 7-2 going into the seventh inning.
Midway put together a bit of a rally. It started when Gilbert, who had two hits and two stolen bases, doubled home
Lana Maupin then scored off a Rio Grand throwing error.
The Red Storm stopped things there, though, dropping Midway to 7-17 in conference play and 12-25 overall.
The Eagles are back home to face Shawnee State (Ohio) on Tuesday, the first game of a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
