MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway got one out away from stealing game one of a doubleheader against Shawnee State Tuesday, but a series of fielding mistakes led to a 2-1 loss.
The Bears seized the momentum in a dominant game two, putting together 19 hits in just five innings and completing the sweep with a 19-2 win.
GAME ONE: SHAWNEE STATE 2, MIDWAY 1
The Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on first and second, a successful double steal produced a run, as an arrant throw at third allowed
Tenley Gilbert to score.
The Bears had runners on second and third with two outs, but Midway looked poised to secure the shutout win when reliever
Sierra Bittner forced a two-out ground ball.
Unfortunately, a fielding error brought the tying run home before a throwing error in the next at-bat gave the Bears a 2-1 lead.
A
Madison Hill single and
Sawyer Snodgrass walk put two runners on with one out in the bottom of the seventh, only for Bear starter Genavie Espinoza to retire the next two batters to end the game.
The loss was another hard-luck gem for Midway starter
Athena Grimley, who has allowed just one earned run over 12-and-two-thirds innings over her last two starts.
GAME TWO: SHAWNEE STATE 19, MIDWAY 2
Shawnee State took advantage of a seemingly deflated Eagle team, batting around in the first, third and fourth innings while six players recorded multiple hits.
Bittner had two hits for Midway, while she and Hill both had RBIs in the first inning.
The Eagles fall to 12-28 with a 7-19 mark in the River States Conference.
A scheduled Saturday doubleheader against Indiana Southeast was moved up to Friday due to weather concerns. Game one will begin at 4 p.m. with a senior day celebration held before game two.
