Game Recap: Softball |

Softball comes up short on senior day

MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway softball battled but ultimately came up short in both ends of a home doubleheader against a strong Indiana Southeast squad on Friday evening, losing 2-0 and 6-3.

Between the two games, the Eagles held a senior day celebration for departing players Alexia Hoskins, Sawyer Snodgrass, Kennadi Thompson, Anna Duncan, Tenley Gilbert, Ryann Berger, Sidney Hudnall and Sydney Roe.

Game 1: IU SOUTHEAST 2, MIDWAY 0

In a game dominated by pitching and defense, the Eagles fell 2-0 after a pair of late runs by the Grenadiers in the top of the seventh.

Starter Hoskins was stellar through five innings, scattering four hits without allowing a run.

Reliever Roe kept the game tied until a solo homer by IUS pitcher Hannah Nunemaker broke the deadlock in the seventh. A defensive miscue later in the inning allowed an insurance run, which sealed the Eagles' fate.

Offensively, Midway couldn't break through against Nunemaker, who allowed just two hits—one each from Berger and Payton Baum.

Game 2: IU SOUTHEAST 6, MIDWAY 3

Midway showed resilience in game two, rallying back from an early 5-0 hole to bring the game within striking distance before falling 6-3.

After Indiana Southeast plated five in the second inning and added a sixth run in the fifth, the Eagles mounted a strong response.

In the bottom of the fifth, Madison Hill reached base, setting up Berger, who delivered a towering two-run homer to put Midway on the board.

Later in the inning, Baum delivered an RBI single that scored Sierra Bittner, trimming the lead to 6-3.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure, putting runners aboard in the sixth and seventh, but were ultimately unable to close the gap.

Anna Duncan took the loss in the circle, with Athena Grimley and Breanna Beach providing effective relief—Beach allowing no hits over two scoreless frames.

Baum led the offense with a 3-for-4 performance, while Berger added two RBIs and her third home run of the season. Bittner also chipped in with a double, helping Midway notch six hits in the contest.

The Eagles will be on the road in a quick trip to Georgetown, Ky. for a non conference double header with the Tigers on April 22.
