Midway baseball loses tight series finale at Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Midway baseball homered three times and put the winning run on base in the ninth inning, only for Oakland City reliever Dicky Gonzalez to end the game with a strikeout, completing OCU's three-game sweep of the Eagles with a 5-4 win in the series finale Sunday.

Down 1-0 early, Midway tied the game on a solo home run by Eli Glasscock in the third inning, then took a 2-1 lead on a fourth-inning Mighty Oak error.

OCU took the lead back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth before the teams traded solo home runs in the sixth, Midway's coming from Barrett McGill, Oakland City's from Marcos Arocho.

The final run came via another Eagle solo shot, this one by Peyton Henry in the seventh inning to make it a 5-4 game.

After escaping a two-on-with-nobody-out jam in the bottom of the seventh, Dalton Soergel worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning to give the Eagles a chance in their final at-bat.

Midway then put Henry and McGill on base via walks, but with two outs, Gonzalez was put into the game, where he struck out Ayden Sciandra.

With the win, the Mighty Oaks stay tied with Indiana Southeast atop the River States Conference standings with a record of 15-2, while the Eagles, who are 16-21 overall, drop to 7-11 with their sixth-consecutive conference loss.

POSTSEASON OUTLOOK

Despite the recent struggles, Midway's RSC Tournament fate still lies in its own hands.

With six league games remaining, the Eagles hold the sixth and final spot in the conference tournament, one game ahead of 6-12 West Virginia Tech and Rio Grande. The Eagles have tie-breakers over both teams, having swept the Golden Bears and won two of three against the Red Storm.

Midway is two games back of fifth-place Brescia, with the teams scheduled to square off in a three-game series in Ownesboro to close the regular season on April 25-26.

The Eagles also host a three-game set against Indiana Columbus, which is last in the RSC record of 2-16, this Friday and Saturday.

Before that, they travel to Campbellsville for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
