MIDWAY, Ky. - With nothing to lose, a loose Midway softball team snagged a pair of wins against St. Mary of the Woods (Ind.) in a River States Conference doubleheader Wednesday.
The Eagles won via a walkoff, two-run, eighth-inning single by
Payton Baum to win the opener 4-3, then scored eight times in the fifth to win a 12-4, run-rule finale in game two.
GAME ONE: MIDWAY 4, ST. MARY OF THE WOODS 3 (8 INNINGS)
After getting out of a runners-on-second-and-third-with-one-out jam unscathed in the bottom of the seventh, the Pomeroys took the lead early in the top of the eighth on an RBI double by Jaidhyn Fuller.
But after a single and error, again, put runners on second and third with one out, this time the Eagles took advantage, when Baum ripped a single just inside the third base line, bringing in Sidney Apling and
Lana Maupin.
The star of the game offensively was
Kennadi Thompson, who reached base all four times she came to the plate. This included an RBI single in the third and a sixth-inning double that resulted in a run scored on a Maupin sacrifice fly.
Sierra Watson added two hits while
Athena Grimley scattered eight hits to get the complete-game win in the pitching circle.
Midway also got a great defensive effort from shortstop
Madison Hill, who made three separate diving stops, none bigger than a 6-3 double play she was able to turn in the seventh.
GAME TWO: MIDWAY 12, ST. MARY OF THE WOODS 4 (5 INNINGS)
Game two went back-and-forth early. After SMWC scored first, Apling delivered a two-run single, before Baum hit an opposite-field home run to right field in the second to make it 3-1.
The Pomeroys scored twice in the top of the third, before Thompson made it 4-3 with an RBI sacrifice bunt. After another SMWC run tied it in the fourth, Thompson had another RBI bunt, this one a single, to put Midway ahead 5-4 early in the bottom of the fifth.
The lead would stay that way with two outs, but the tight game would turn into a blowout, as the next seven batters reached, ending things in the fifth.
The scoring started with a Maupin RBI single. Another run came home on an error before the lead stretched to 10-4 on a two-run Watkins single and RBI single by
Tenley Gilbert in consecutive at-bats.
Following a walk,
Sawyer Snodgrass had her third hit of the game, bringing home the game's final two runs.
Snodgrass was also one of four Eagles to score two runs in the game, joined by Thompson, Baum and
Ryann Berger.
Now 14-32 overall with a 9-21 mark in the River States Conference, Midway will close the 2025 season Thursday with a doubleheader at Brescia. The series in Owensboro begins at 1 p.m.
