Eagle women shoot +34 on incomplete first day of golf nationals

YPSILANTI, Mich. - Walking off the course following an incomplete opening round at the NAIA Women's Golf National Championships, Maryssa Phillips expressed a sentiment that was no doubt shared by dozens of her peers.

"Everything was going good until that hole."

The hole in question was the par-five, fifth hole, one that ended an otherwise good day on a sour note for the Eagle women, who were not able to finish the opening round of nationals before it was too dark for play to continue.

After opening play on the back nine with a 15-over par, the Eagles had climbed to fourth place on the scoreboard before the hole in question dropped them to 20th with a plus-34 score of 280.

The front-nine turn started out great for Midway, with Kasey Cameron, Maryssa Phillips and Bree Smith recording a combined four birdies on the first three holes.

But the fifth hole began producing problems before Midway even started play, as a backlog of competitors struggling to conquer its heavily slanted green delayed the Eagles by over an hour.

Once they started, things didn't get better. Cameron and Phillips triple bogey scores of eight while her teammates all finished with nine.

Cameron nearly sunk a miraculous 30-foot putt for par, only for it to curve just inches from the cup, then continue rolling down a decline, stopping about 15 feet from the hole.

Prior to that, Cameron was just one-over par while Philips was at plus-two. They are currently 19th and 27th in the field with three and four holes to play in the opening round respectively.

Kelsay Collins and Savannah Salchli were the only two Eagles to finish their rounds Tuesday. Collins shot an 84 (+12) while Salchli shot an 86 (+14).

Sandwiched between them at 13-over par is Smith, who shot a 72 through 15 holes.

Midway will finish the opening round at 7 a.m. before starting the second round at 9:15 a.m.
