SILVIS, Ill. – After a one-year break, the Midway men's golf team made its return to the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship, opening the first round Wednesday at the renowned TPC Deere Run.
Battling intermittent rain and the pressures of championship play, the Eagles turned in a team score of 301 (+21) on the par-71 layout, ending the day in 27th on the scoreboard.
Weather has been an issue throughout the tournament thus far, as Midway was supposed to begin play Tuesday, but never took the course because of rain.
Leading the charge for Midway were Hayes Mason and Jack Bedell, each carding a four-over par 75.
Mason posted a 39 on the front nine before settling in with an even-par 36 on the back, including birdies on holes No. 7 and 11.
Bedell was steady throughout with nines of 38 and 37, navigating the wet conditions with a composed approach.
Gage Gregory added a 77 (+6), finding a rhythm through the middle of his round and birdieing the par-three 12th to help limit the damage from a few early bogeys.
Benjamin Spencer contributed a 78 (+7), starting strong with a front-nine 37 before facing challenges on the inward stretch. He salvaged part of the back nine with a birdie on 16.
Tristan Mitchell rounded out the lineup with an 82 (+11). After a tough opening stretch, Mitchell found better form on the back nine, shooting 39 and carding a birdie on the par-three 12th.
The Eagles will look to rebound and make the cut as they head into the second round starting at 8:40 a.m. EST.
