Eagles grounded by RedStorm in RSC Women's Volleyball tilt

RIO GRANDE, Ky. -- Following a straight set loss to WVU Tech less than 24 hours before, the Midway women's volleyball team had a quick turnaround on Saturday when they wrapped up a three-match road swing with a River States Conference matchup against Rio Grande (Ohio).

The RedStorm, who were picked to finish second in the league based on the RSC preseason coaches' poll, proved why as they swept the Eagles in straight sets with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-21, 25-22).

The Eagles (1-8, 0-2 RSC) went back and forth with the home squad in the first set and trailed just 20-18, but they wouldn't score again. Rio Grande closed the set on a 5-0 run en route to the 25-18 first set win.

The second frame saw the Eagles capitalize on three consecutive Rio Grande miscues to get within 22-21, but similar to the first set, the RedStorm (11-6, 2-0 RSC) closed on a 3-0 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead with a 25-21 win in the second set.

In the third stanza, the RedStorm opened with an 8-0 run and later used a 6-0 rally to take a comfortable 16-5 advantage. Midway got within 24-22 following an 8-1 run, but Rio Grande sealed the sweep with a 25-22 victory in the final set.

Alyssa Medeiros led the offensive effort, putting down 12 kills in 25 swings to finish with a .400 attacking percentage. Kayedon Mattingly had five kills and a .444 hitting clip, while Ava Benner also chipped in five kills in the loss.

Emma Lesher ran the offense and dished out a career best 17 assists, while Benner led the defensive effort with a match-high eight digs. Aubry Kamholz, meanwhile, collected seven digs.

Kennedy Mang's squad is set to return to action on Thursday, September 18, when they take on Cumberlands (Ky.) at 6 p.m. ET inside Marshall Gymnasium. The Patriots were ranked No. 20 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll.
