MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway had strong moments but eventually wore down against the NAIA No. 14-ranked University of the Cumblerlands, losing 25-19, 25-16, 25-12 in a women's volleyball match at Marshall Gymnasium Thursday.
The Eagles had their best stretch of play in the first set. Down 14-10, they went on a 5-1 run, highlighted by two
Zoie Hays kills and two
Mayson Delong aces.
They kept things tight for awhile, even getting within 19-17 on a Delong kill before the Patriots took control with four straight points.
Set two featured a similar run for Midway, which fell behind 6-1 early before scoring four in a row, a stretch highlighted by Hays,
Kayedon Mattingly and
Emma Lesher kills on consecutive plays.
But again, the Patriots took back control by scoring five straight points. They then carried that momentum into a third set in which they scored the first seven points.
Now 15-0, Cumberlands has dropped just three sets all season while winning 33 in a row.
Hays, Delong and Ayssa Medeiros had five kills, with Delong also leading the team with eight digs.
Lesher had a team-best nine assists for 1-9 Midway, which returns to River States Conference action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. road matchup against Indiana East.
