Men's soccer team drops rough RSC opener to SMWC

MIDWAY, Ky. - River States Conference play started on a frustrating note for the Midway men's soccer team, which sustained a 3-1 home loss to Saint Mary of the Woods Thursday night.

Aside from having multiple clean looks either sail wide or bounce off the post, the Eagles also had two apparent goals called off as the ball was entering the net.

One apparent goal in the first half was called off due to an in-play foul. Then, moments after a Saint Mary of the Woods own goal got Midway within 3-1, another score off a free kick was nullified when it was ruled that an Eagle player pushed the shot in with his hand.

The Pomeroys had no issues taking advantage of their opportunities, scoring in the 10th minute then netting two goals in a 3:59 stretch between the first and second halves off of Eagle defensive miscues.

Things don't get easier for Midway on Saturday, as it will travel to face 5-0-2 West Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. The Golden Bears currently have the highest RPI ranking in the NAIA and recently earned a 4-2 road win over NAIA No. 2-ranked Cumberlands.
