BECKLEY, W.V. - Facing a team with one of the NAIA's best resumes, Midway men's soccer put up a great fight, but ultimately suffered a 3-2 loss in River States Conference play to West Virginia Tech Saturday.
The Golden Bears entered the day 5-0-2 and thanks to wins like its 4-2 road triumph over then No. 2-ranked Cumberlands, had the NAIA's top RPI ranking. But it was the Eagles who struck first when
George Spencer scored in the 32nd minute off an assist by
Rhys Dickson.
But that was countered immediately, as Julen Recalde scored a goal for Tech just 2:44 later. Then, just 27 seconds after that, Leny Duperray scored to give the Golden Bears the lead.
Recalde scored again in the 62nd minute to make it 3-1 before Midway got back within 3-2 on an unassisted goal by
Brayden Gillman with 21:58 remaining.
The Eagles would get one more shot on goal with just under seven minutes to play, by
Ben Banton's header try was saved by keeper Luka Felix.
Now 2-5-2 overall with an 0-2 record in the RSC, Midway is back home for a non-conference, in-state matchup with Pikeville at 5 p.m. Wednesday.Â
