MIDWAY, Ky. -- Following a road matchup against Kentucky Christian on Friday night, the Midway women's volleyball team returned to Marshall Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon when they hosted Shawnee State (Ohio) in a River States Conference matchup.
The Midway offense struggled to get anything going offensively, while they also struggled to stop the SSU offensive attack in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-16) loss to the Bears.
After allowing Shawnee State (14-6, 4-1 RSC) to post a .323 hitting mark in the first set, the Eagles came out firing in the second. The set saw Midway sprint to a 5-0 lead following back-to-back aces by
Ava Benner and a pair of kills by
Nyla Gaines.
A
Kayedon Mattingly block gave Midway a 20-19 lead late in the set, but the Bears closed with 6-1 run to win the set 25-21. Shawnee State would then complete the sweep after winning the third set 25-16.
Gaines led the offensive effort for the Eagles with seven kills, while
Journee Porter finished with four.
Lindsey Whitehouse and
Emma Lesher dished out 13 and eight assists, respectively, while Lesher led the defensive effort with six digs.
Aubry Kamholz and Benner added five digs apiece.
Midway is set to return to action on Friday, October 3, when they travel to Kokomo, Ind. to take on the top team in the RSC, IU Kokomo (Ind.).
