Golden Bears smother Eagles as men's basketball win streak comes to an end

MIDWAY, Ky. - A four-game win streak came to an end for the Midway men's basketball team Tuesday, as River States Conference foe West Virginia Tech ground the Eagle offense to a complete halt in a 78-59 final at Marshall Gymnasium.

The Eagles looked out of sorts from the beginning, falling behind by as much as seven in the opening 12 minutes before seemingly finding a rhythm.

A Sarvell Barksdale 3-pointer was answered by a Sam Parrish layup on the following possession and Midway held its first lead, 25-23.

But that would be the Eagles' lone lead of the night. WVU Tech responded with a 16-4 run to close the half, with an Ian Goings 3-pointer making it a 39-29 game at the break.

Looking to counter the methodical pace of the Golden Bears, Midway got within five points halfway through the second half, as a Dontavius King layup made it a 54-49 game.

But Tech would respond by scoring 10 of the next 11 points and held control the rest of the way, eventually going ahead by as many as 22.

The Midway defense struggled to contain guard Brandon Moore, who had 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting.

But the biggest issues came on the offensive end, as an Eagle team that averaged 92.5 points per-game during its four-game win streak didn't crack 60 on Tuesday.

Midway shot just 40.4 percent from the field, was just 3-of-19 from 3-point range hand had 17 turnovers to Tech's eight.

King finished with an 11-point, 13-rebound double-double. Amari Wales had a team-best 12 points with Parris adding 10 and a game-high four assists.

Midway drops to 7-10 overall with a 4-3 mark in the River States. The Eagles will look to rebound with a trip to Oakland City (Ind.) this weekend.

The game is currently scheduled for 3 p.m. on Saturday, but is likely to move due to a heavy snow storm that is expected to hit the area.
