Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's basketball team tops Oakland City for fifth win in six games

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. - Three days after a tough loss, the Midway men's basketball team bounced back in strong fashion Friday, pulling away for an 82-70 River States Conference road win over Oakland City.

After the Eagles took a 31-29 lead at the halfway point, the lead changed hands eight times in the first 7:02 of the second half, with Midway pulling ahead 52-51 on a layup by Decoreio Smith.

That would prove to be the final lead change, as Smith's basket was part of a 15-2 run in which five players scored. The Midway lead would eventually stretch to 14 points and stayed in double digits for the final 3:13 of play.

While the attack was balanced all afternoon, the offense primarily ran through Amari Wales, who had an excellent 21-point effort.

Wales, who shot 8-of-16 from the field, also tied Dontavius King for the team lead with eight rebounds.

He was joined in double figures by Sam Parrish and Smith, who scored 15 and 11 points respectively.

Coming off the bench, Daylon Tanksley made a strong impression in his Midway debut, scoring nine points.

Defensively, King made four steals while Wales and Parrish had three apiece, as the Eagles held an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

This gives Midway five wins in the last six games, running its overall record to 8-10 and its RSC record to 5-3.

The Eagles are back on the road Tuesday, traveling to face Rio Grande (Ohio) at 6 p.m. They are looking for a bit of payback after the Red Storm came to Midway and earned a 71-64 win in the River States opener on Dec. 2.
