Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Grenadiers pull away from Eagles in men's basketball

MIDWAY, Ky. - A strong first half and 24-point effort from Sam Parrish weren't enough for Midway, which saw its offense sputter down the stretch in a 73-64 loss to Indiana Southeast in River States Conference men's basketball action Saturday.

Midway shot just under 50 percent (17-of-35) and hit five 3-pointers in the opening 20 minutes to take a 40-35 lead at halftime. Leading the way was Parrish, who had 15 points, including an acrobatic layup in traffic just before time expired in the first half.

The game would then be played within a five point window for the first 17:55 of the second half, but the Grenadiers would hold the lead for the final 10:25, going ahead 55-53 on a Trent Hinkle jumper.

From that point on, the Eagles would make just 2-of-11 shots from the floor, with the final field goal being a Parrish jumper with 5:21 to play.

The free throw line wasn't much kinder, with Midway at one point missing 4 of 5 attempts while the deficit was within five points. Immediately after two of those misses, Camden Pfeister essentially iced the game with a 3-pointer that made it 70-62 IUS with just over two minutes remaining.

The Eagles shot just 8-of-30 (26.7 percent) and didn't make a 3-pointer in the second half, as they struggled to deal with the length of a Grenadier team that played four guys 6-foot, 5-inches or taller.

Parrish also had four steals and four assists, while Decorio Smith added 11 points and Amari Wales 10 rebounds for 8-11 Midway, which is now 5-4 in the RSC.

The Eagles are currently in third place in the RSC East Division, one game behind second place Rio Grande and just ahead of West Virginia Tech (4-6), Kentucky Christian (4-6) and Indiana East (3-7). The top four teams in the division qualify for the River States Tournament.

They are on the road to face IU East, a team they defeated 89-85 on Jan. 6, at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
