MIDWAY, Ky. - While Indiana East made things interesting down the stretch, the Midway men's basketball team made enough plays and rode a big second-half run to snap an eight-game losing streak, topping the visiting Red Wolves 89-85 in River States Conference action Tuesday.
In the first 34 minutes, the highly competitive game saw 10 ties and 13 lead changes before Midway built what looked to be an insurmountable advantage.
With the score tied at 67,
Travontae Swift got good penetration in the paint, and whipped a pass to an open
Decoreio Smith, who made a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a three-point lead.
On the ensuing possession, Midway ran a virtually identical play, this time with
Sam Parrish making the cut to find the open Smith, who hit another triple on his way to a team-best 19-point performance.
There was another bout of Deja vu a few minutes later, when Parrish proceeded to score fast break baskets on three-consecutive possessions, the last being a dunk that put the Eagles up 83-72 with just under three minutes remaining.
But IU East would proceed to make things a bit close for Midway's comfort in the closing moments.
Four straight Red Wolf points were answered by an
Amari Wales layup, before IU then scored four more points at the foul line to make it an 85-80 game.
The Eagles then proceeded to miss the front end of consecutive 1-and-1 tries, which opened the door for Cole Henry, who led all players with 27 points, to make it a two-point game with 37 seconds to play on a 3-pointer.
Luckily for Midway, IU East wouldn't get a shot to tie the score or take the lead.
Dontavius King hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining, and after the Red Wolves scored again, Parrish closed the game out with two free throws to seal the win.
Wales finished with 18 points while Parrish had an excellent all-around game, scoring 15 points while leading all players with seven rebounds and six assists.
While the backcourt put the game away in the second half, starting center
Maurice Washington Williams led the way in the first, scoring 12 of his 14 points in the opening 20 minutes. Washington Williams finished the night a perfect 7-of-7 from the floor.
Now 4-9 overall, Tuesday was Midway's
first win since Nov. 11Â and ran its record in conference play to 1-2.
The Eagles have a good chance to start a win streak Saturday when they travel to face 2-9 Brescia in Owensboro at 3 p.m.
