MARSHALL, Mo. - Midway got its first dual wins of the men's wrestling season, finishing with a 2-2 record at the Missouri Valley Duals.
Both of the Eagles' wins came against teams receiving votes in the NAIA national rankings. The star of the day was
Christopher Sperin, who put together a record of 4-0.
MIDWAY 33, OKLAHOMA WESLEYAN 16
The Eagles' first win of the season was aided by three forfeits and punctuated by pinfalls from Sperin and
Stephen Browning.
Sperin pinned Blake Velotta 1:58 into their 157-pound match while Browning took down Cameron Pride in 1:32 at 197.
Aidan Karpinski got the Eagles a win as well, as he earned a 9-3 decision over Davi Dell at 165.
MIDWAY 21, DAKOTA WESLEYAN (S.D) 18
The Eagles fell in a 10-0 hole after losses in the first three weight classes, only to rally with wins in five of the next six.
Chris Begley started things off with a pin of Zach Kolbe 1:47 into the first period at 149, before Sperin grabbed a 10-4 decision over Tyson Johnson at 157.
Dakota Wesleyan retook the lead with a tech fall win at 165 before
Sebastian Hutchinson put the Eagles back on top with a 9-6 decision over Jaxon Quall at 184.
A 197 forfeit for Browning made it 21-15 and Midway held on despite a 5-1 loss in the heavyweight division.
NO. 12 MISSOURI VALLEY 44, MIDWAY 5
The Vikings lived up to their high national ranking, winning eight matches by either pinfall, tech fall or major decision.
The Eagles got their lone victory via another great effort by Sperin, who got a tech fall his own against Rich Hart at 157 by the final of 17-1.
COLBY COMMUNITY COLLEGE (KAN.) 29, MIDWAY 22
The Eagles rallied again after falling behind early. Down 8-0, Midway got a 15-0 tech fall win by
Alex Velazquez over Savieon Garrison at 141.
After Colby got a pin at 148, the Eagles got 11 points on back-to-back wins by Sperin and Karpinski at 157 and 165 respectively. Sperin beat Jovanny Arelianes 18-3, before Karpinski pinned Salvador Barintas in just 39 seconds.
Browning then got his third win of the day with a 197-pound pin of Kash Alley to get the Eagles within 26-22 going into the heavyweight match before Colby clinched the win with a 4-1 decision.
The Eagles return to Mid-South Conference competition on Wednesday when they travel to face No. 9 Cumberland (Tenn.) at 8 p.m.
