GRAYSON, Ky. - With its biggest game of the season two days away, the Midway women's basketball team emphatically took care of business, routing Kentucky Christian 111-69 on Tuesday.
The win, the Eagles' 10th in a row, moved them to 10-2 in River States Conference play and clinched a spot in the conference tournament.Â
It also equaled the most points a Midway team has scored in a conference game since at least the 2003-04 season, the earliest year records were available. The Eagles also scored 111 points against Indiana East on Jan. 22, 2015 and Berea on Jan. 11, 2007.
It was a well-trotted formula that took Midway to the blowout win, forcing 30 turnovers which led to 35 points.
This was aided by great offensive balance, as 16 players scored, none netting more than 15 points.
Leading the offensive charge was
Alexis Taylor, who had 15 points in 15 minutes on 6-of-7 shooting, while also pulling down a team-high six rebounds.
Starters
Jermyra Christian and
A'Lyrica Hughes had 12 and 11 points respectively, while
Alexys Moore an
Lauren Walton both had 10 off the bench. Â
Christian led the team with four assists and three steals as well. All told, 10 different Eagles had a steal on Tuesday.
Midway maintains a two-game advantage over Shawnee State (9-4) in the loss column for the second-place spot in the RSC East Division with four to play.
The Eagles, who are 56th in the country in RPI, have a great chance to improve their at-large NAIA Tournament chances on Tuesday at home against No. 8 Rio Grande, which is 23-1 overall and atop the RSC East at 12-0.
The teams played a thriller in Rio on Dec. 2,
with the Red Storm escaping with a 67-66 win.
Thursday's game at Marshall Gymnasium tips at 6 p.m.
