MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway men's volleyball went the distance on Wednesday night, as Kentucky State outlasted them in five sets, 27-25, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-10.
The contest was closely fought in the opening set. Midway took an 18-15 lead as Luke Wallace recorded a service ace. Midway then tied the score at 24-24 and 25-25 before committing a pair of attack errors to allow the Thorobreds to secure the set at 27-25.
Midway returned serve back in set two, also keeping them in front behind kills by Lars Ketelaars and Braden Cacek. Kentucky State narrowed that score to 24-23. A service error tied that match up at one all.
In the third set, the momentum shifted towards the Thorobreds as Jamir Patterson started with back-to-back service aces. At 24-22, Midway closed the gap, but Kentucky State closed out the frame.
Set four was another back-and-forth contest. Tied at 21-21, the Eagles scored a win in the fifth set with the timely hitting of Cacek to win the set at 25-23.
In the final set, the teams were even at 5-5. The Eagles thought they had scored a point to tie the score at 10, but the point was canceled to stretch the KSU lead to 11-9. From there, the Thoroughbreds capitalized on the chances to score, and kills by Aidan Anestor, D'Angelo Colman and Charles Ababio ensured the team emerged victorious with a 15-10 score.
A major highlight in the loss came from Lincoln Anderson, who tied his own single-match program record with 24 digs.
After setting a career-high with 22 assists in a three-set loss to Kentucky State Tuesday, Noah Fichter was even stronger on Wednesday with 25. He set up the likes of Wallace and JT Kimball, who had 14 and 10 kills respectively.
Now 0-9, the Eagles will play on return to River States Conference action on February 17th with a 7 p.m. home matchup against Rio Grande.
